Adventure Details
This is a riverbed ride in Central Hawkes Bay up the Mangaonuku Stream and Mangamate Stream from the Tikokino Rd bridge access along the stopbank. Below the confluence, there is a 4wd track to follow. The Mangamate is mostly open gravel riverbed, except the area around the SH50 bridge. The upper reaches on the Mangaonuku get smaller and more technical the further upstream. There is also access from The Brow Rd, Wharetoka Rd, and the Creek Rd stock route if you want to start or finish somewhere different.
There is a 4wd track to the confluence of the Mangonuku and Mangamate. SXS can make it up the Mangamate. And the upper reaches of the Mangaonuku past Flying Spanner will require a 2wheeler.
Take care on the exposed mudstone rocks. When these are wet, you won't be able to stand on them. This track should only be attempted when water levels are low, and you should be prepared to undrown your bike if it takes a drink.
