Adventure Details
These are rideable streams in the Kereru area.
- Ohara Stream from Mangleton Rd bridge to Ngaruroro River confluence.
- Poporangi Stream from Big Hill Rd bridge to Ohara Stream confluence.
- Big Hill Stream (coming in summer 25).
These are isolated braided streams, with many water crossings, about every 100m. They are G4 to G5, depending on water level, how the gravel has moved during the last flood, and how recent that flood was. The provided files are not gospel, the water can move with every flood, and the vegetation grows up. There are no formed tracks, you will be navigating yourself along the stream bed.
Some warnings before attempting these streams. Be prepared to undrown your bike. Don't ride through a crossing if you can't see the bottom. It is best practice to cross immediately upstream from a rapid section, the water is likely to be shallower. It is always easier to ride downstream rather than upstream. Master your clutch and throttle control to maintain balance in the water when you ride into unseen rocks. This area is notorious for soft sandy spots.
There is public access at Mangleton Rd bridge, either of the Big Hill Rd bridges, or if the Ngaruroro River is low enough, you can cross it to the Whanawhana anglers access.
A rule of thumb for water level is if the Ngaruroro River at Whanawhana flowing less than 1500mm, then most water crossings on these streams should be less than 600mm.
